Nicholas Kristof (not my favorite NY Times columnist, but whatever) today quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. from a 1959 sermon in which he quoted a former slave preacher.  His prayer is pretty apt for America this week, I think:

“Lord, we ain’t what we want to be; we ain’t what we ought to be; we ain’t what we gonna be, but, thank God, we ain’t what we was.”
