Every year, my department offers to buy me a paper calendar. They send me an email with four options to choose from. Every year, I think about getting one, because my department doesn’t often offer to buy me things. Every year, though, I eventually laugh and delete the email.

But before I laugh, I always think about getting one of these giant (22″ × 17″) monthly desk pads. The only possible explanation is that my mom always had one of these giant calendars on her desk at work, and I’m always tempted to get one as a sort of homage to her and to the office of the 1980s.

I get a deskpad/calendar almost every year – it’s often a handy writing/doodle surface when I’m on calls.
