Monthly Archives: March 2016

Week in Review, 2016-W12.

(March 21, 2016 — March 27, 2016)

I am eliminating the “Professional” category for now. My week-to-week just isn’t that exciting. Also, I’m getting the itch to make some posts beyond these weekly updates, but that probably won’t happen on the regular until the semester ends.

Travel

  • Nope.
  • Upcoming: Chicago.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

  • Fell a little behind on Infinite Jest again, but once again more than caught up on the weekend. I feel like I may have finally gotten some momentum, though, so maybe that will carry me through the month that remains.
  • No TV this week.
  • Another week, another episode of On Being. This week, an interview with Nikki Giovanni. I’m proud to have such colleagues.

Family and Friends

  • Took the kids and my mother-in-law to Salem Sox Fest on Saturday. We ate free ballpark food, picked up the Kid’s Club T-shirts, and went down the bouncy slide 100 times. (Ok. I didn’t go down the bouncy slide, but the kids did.)
  • Participated in both the Easter Sunrise service and the traditional Easter service at church. And lo, it was good.
  • Had a delicious Easter dinner with the immediate family plus both grandmothers.

Home Improvement

  • Continuing in shame.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran four times: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • Weight: 194.4. I have mostly been below last week this week, but not on Sunday, which is what counts.

Week in Review, 2016-W11.

(March 14, 2016 — March 20, 2016)

My original plan was to get these up on Sunday evenings, but my current Sunday schedule isn’t very conducive to that (a fact which will probably change in May). So, I’ve been mostly posting on Monday. But I didn’t post on Monday this week, and now it’s Tuesday, and I almost went to bed without posting. But here I am.

Travel

  • Was near DC (Reston, VA to be precise) from Monday to Wednesday for an NSF PI meeting on Tuesday. I can’t say that I found the content of the meeting especially useful, but the networking was far above average. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
  • Visited Fairy Stone State Park from Friday to Sunday.
  • Upcoming: Nope.

Professional

  • Nothing exciting to report.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

  • Fell behind on Infinite Jest for much of the week, but then read during spare moments on the weekend camping trip and got caught up. So, I’m still plugging away. I’m experiencing the book differently this time. Pieces of it are delightful, funny, incisive, brilliant—sometimes all of those at once. But it can also be difficult to like at times: tedious, sad, even disgusting.
  • No TV this week.
  • I’m not going to list podcasts, sports, and music every week, because that would be dull, but adding some things that catch my ear seemed worthwhile.
  • I’ve started listening to Cortex, from the beginning, and it is great. I’ve (mostly) dropped a couple of podcasts recently, and Cortex is filling that niche.
  • This episode of On Being, an interview with Jean Vanier, is just fantastic.
  • I’ve been listening to Washington Nationals baseball again, since Spring Training started. Nice to be back with Charlie and Dave.

Family and Friends

  • Took all three kids and spent the weekend with Cub and Boy Scouts at Fairy Stone State Park. It was great; the cabins were nice. Such easy camping that I’m planning to return with the family.

Home Improvement

  • Continuing in shame.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran only once, on Tuesday. This wasn’t exactly what I planned, but I used to take a week off every couple of months, and it seemed to do me good. So once it became clear that my running plans for the week were in shambles, I just let it go.
  • Weight: 193.8.

Week in Review, 2016-W10.

(March 7, 2016 — March 13, 2016)

Travel

  • Nope.
  • Upcoming: Near DC.

Professional

  • Filed my annual “Faculty Activity Report.”
  • Worked on teaching stuff, but didn’t get as caught up as one might hope, given that it was Spring Break.

Reading and Watching

Family and Friends

  • Raced in the pinewood derby. We didn’t do particularly well, but we had fun.

Home Improvement

  • Shameful lack of anything to report.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran three times, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. All outside, so that was awesome.
  • Weight: 194.2.

Week in Review, 2016-W09.

(February 29, 2016 — March 6, 2016)

Travel

  • Nope.
  • Upcoming: Nope.

Professional

  • On the teaching front, I survived to Spring Break, and I made overly ambitious plans about all the catching up that I was going to do during the break.
  • I finally finished comments on that Ph.D. dissertation. Now plugging away on a M.S. thesis.
  • I still don’t know what to do with this section of these posts. But, I have decreed that the big professional goal for the year is to get some proposals out. So, might focus these updates on those efforts. Nevertheless, I don’t think that project can really start until I’ve survived the remaining 8 weeks of the semester.

Reading and Watching

  • Continued on Infinite Jest, on schedule.
  • Started reading Fair Ball: A Fan’s Case for Baseball. It’s short, so I’ll finish it soon. The main problem that I’m having is that I know that things have improved from the situation that Costas describes. And I know that some of his suggestions have even been implemented, while others have not. But on the major issue of revenue sharing, I’m not entirely clear what MLB is doing now. In any case, fun to think about the economics of professional sports leagues and how they differ from most other businesses.
  • Started re-reading The Grind: Inside Baseball’s Endless Season after the friend who leant it to me asked for it back to get it signed. Wound up ordering another copy so that I could ask her to get one signed for me, too.
  • Continued watching season 2 of Mozart in the Jungle with Becky.

Family and Friends

  • Finished pinewood derby cars with all three kids. Race next Saturday (March 12).
  • Tried to get the kids to go to the VT vs. Miami men’s basketball game, but only Megan wanted to go, so we didn’t. Turns out VT pulled off a huge upset of Miami, and it would have been fun to be there.

Home Improvement

  • No progress.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran three times, on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. Still working on pace, mostly.
  • Weight: 194.0. Not sure what’s going on here. Probably need to get it in check, though.
