Week in Review, 2016-W23.

(June 6, 2016 — June 12, 2016)

Travel

  • On Sunday (June 12), we traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Main purpose was to meet up with my sister, who was in from Texas with her baby boy. We decided to take the kids to Dollywood, a staple of my childhood. And if you have a one-day ticket for Dollywood, then you can get in free after 3p the day before. So, we did that on Sunday afternoon, but maybe more on that next week.
  • Upcoming: Only the completion of the trip above.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

Family and Friends

  • On Saturday, Charlie rode his bike about two miles to the mall for ice cream and back with his Cub Scout troop. He reported that it was a long way. I wanted to go with them, but we had too much going on. Tentatively planning to try to do the same ride with just my own kids, but would like to get the youngster off his training wheels first. I’m not sure how that’s going to go.

Home Improvement

  • Completed and installed the headboard. Intended to write a bit more about it here, but haven’t yet. You can see a picture, however.

Finally finished our new headboard. Finally.

* Put up a ceiling fan in aforementioned youngest child’s room. He got the first one because he’s closest to the attic access (and I had to change out the ceiling box to one that was fan-ready). The project ate up much of the day, but it went more smoothly than I expected overall.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran four times this week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. On Saturday, I even did 10k, though I was lagging by the end. Next week will be back to my slacker ways, it appears.

(May 30, 2016 — June 5, 2016)

The Sunday social media fast experiment continues to be successful. It doesn’t have quite the same benefits as longer breaks, when you can actually decondition yourself from “checking” constantly. But I think it’s still good to have a more frequent break from it.

Travel

  • Nope.
  • Upcoming: East Tennessee with family.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

Family and Friends

  • Finally held M’s birthday party on Saturday. (For various reasons, other weekends closer to her birthday didn’t work.) We went with a turnkey party at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. It was fun, a lot less work than handling all the details ourselves, and not really much more expensive.

Home Improvement

  • Our new headboard is almost finished, and will be installed for-sure before the next weekly update. I still haven’t taken a picture.
  • Some progress on other home projects, too.

Health and Fitness

  • Only ran once, on Monday. A big work event threw me off schedule during the rest of the work week, and then the weekend was taken up with other commitments.

(May 23, 2016 — May 29, 2016)

Actually stuck with the Sunday social media fast today, and it was good.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

  • Didn’t make much progress on the Instapaper queue this week. Too much professional reading, and…
  • I am reading the Book of Reports for the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, to which I am a delegate in about three weeks. And it is electrifying reading, let me tell you.
  • Still listening to quite a bit of baseball, but also gradually working my way through the archives of the Cortex podcast. Which I may or may not have mentioned here previously, but is really enjoyable.
  • A rather old episode of This American Life aired recently, but it was amazing and had me cackling on the porch.

Family and Friends

  • Pretty quiet weekend at home, finally. Though my daughter had a little performance with the youth choirs today, and it was good.
  • Spent much of the weekend on those long-delayed home improvement projects.

Home Improvement

  • Finished preparing the other raised bed for vegetables.
  • Finished assembly of the headboard, and I should post a picture, but it is too dark. Need to sand it and prepare it for painting, then a couple of coats of paint, and then install it. I will post a picture at some point.
  • My brother-in-law gave my daughter a bird feeder for her window. I installed that, and we put some seed in it. The bird feeder is sorely lacking in squirrel defenses, but we’ll see how it does.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. Ran a 10k on the weekend, and it mostly went well, though I started off too fast and wound up having to walk a bit.
  • Weight: 190.

Week in Review, 2016-W20.

(May 16, 2016 — May 22, 2016)

The Sunday social media experiment resumed this week, although once again, I didn’t remember it until sometime mid-morning on Sunday. Setting a weekly alarm right now.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

Family and Friends

  • This weekend, I danced with my daughter in her dance recital. It was, quite literally, probably a unique opportunity to see me dance on stage. And (most of) you missed it.

Home Improvement

  • I actually think that I did this in W19, but forgot to include it. I cleared and added soil to one of our raised beds so that Becky could plant some vegetables.
  • Did some prep work on getting other projects moving again. So that’s exciting.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran Thursday, Saturday. Think I’m going to start running in the morning again. It’s summer, so the sun is up early. And it’s just so hard to work it into the schedule at other times.
  • Weight: 190.

Week in Review, 2016-W19.

(May 9, 2016 — May 15, 2016)

I was out and about on Sunday and barely remembered what day it was most of the day, and I totally forgot my Sunday social media experiment. I’ll try to resume that next week…

Travel

  • Monday and Tuesday were spent in Pittsburgh. Drove up early Monday morning, had a project meeting on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, and then drove back on Tuesday afternoon. And it was good.
  • And on Saturday, I took the kids up to Washington, DC. On Sunday, we did some sightseeing and went to a birthday party and a Nats game, which was fantastic.
  • Upcoming: Nope, nope, nope. Currently nothing on the schedule until the family vacation in July.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

Family and Friends

  • As noted above, I took the kids to Washington, DC. The occasion was a birthday party, but it doesn’t take much of an excuse to get me to a Nats game and the schedule worked out. Before heading to the ballpark, we walked around the National Mall: Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Which mostly left the kids wanting to spend more time sightseeing in DC. The birthday party was good, too. The game could have turned out better, but otherwise a fantastic day.

Home Improvement

  • The van was not ready for our trip. So we took the rental van.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran Tuesday, Thursday.
  • Weight: 191. Put out with the shenanigans of our digital scale, my wife bought an analog one with a dial. This is going to put a damper on the daily weight tracking, because I can really only read it to the nearest pound, with my glasses on. But maybe it’s just as well.

Week in Review, 2016-W18.

(May 2, 2016 — May 8, 2016)

This doesn’t fit cleanly in one of these categories: I’ve started taking Sunday off from social media. My idea is sundown on Saturday until sundown on Sunday, but I have yet to remember before Sunday morning. Anyway, I like it; we’ll see if it sticks.

Travel

  • Upcoming: Pittsburgh; Washington, DC.

Reading, Watching, and Listening

  • Forgot to mention last week that I’ve started working on my Instapaper queue. I have a tradition of clearing my Instapaper queue in December (and not working on it too much the rest of the year). But I have sent so many articles to Instapaper this year that I decided that a mid-year read was in order.
  • No progress this week on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
  • Watched an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, season 2.

Family and Friends

  • Kids had a school program on Thursday. They were, of course, precious.
  • Took the kids on more errands than usual on Saturday, including some Mother’s Day errands.
  • M sang in choir on Sunday. Proud of her.

Home Improvement

  • Took the van in for repair. Seems like it’s going to be done before our trip next weekend, so that’s good.

Health and Fitness

  • Ran Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
  • Weight: 196.2. I can’t even.
